Eagle County's MIRA Bus And Other Nonprofits Help Evacuees

People are settling back at home after evacuating because of the Lake Christine Fire. Eagle County and area nonprofits are doing what they can to ensure people have what they need.

Eagle County’s MIRA bus is parked near the El Jebel Mobile Home Park; MIRA stands for Mobile Intercultural Resource Alliance. Inside, Janet Herrera and her colleagues have bottled water, diapers, food at more at the ready.

"Right now, it seems like we have some Nutella, a little bit of quinoa and some bread," Herrera said, during a recent visit. She's a community engagement specialist for Eagle County and said most people coming to the bus for gift cards to City Market and Whole Foods, donated by the Aspen Community Foundation.

Herrera said nearly everyone she’s talked to has mentioned feeling physically affected in the wake of the fire.

"Their eyes, their stomach, a little vomit-y, back pains," she said.

The MIRA bus is referring people to Mountain Family Health Centers, where they can get a free consultation. The bus will be in El Jebel next week as well.
